Discover Rosso's Italiano

Tucked along the lively waterfront at 25, Dolphin Quays, Poole BH15 1HH, United Kingdom, Rosso's Italiano feels like the kind of place you stumble upon once and then keep returning to. I first visited on a breezy Saturday afternoon after a walk around Poole Quay, drawn in by the warm lighting and the unmistakable aroma of garlic, tomatoes, and freshly baked pizza dough drifting onto the promenade. Since then, it’s become my go-to Italian restaurant in Poole whenever friends ask for somewhere relaxed yet reliably good.

The location alone deserves attention. Dolphin Quays offers marina views that add something special to the dining experience. Sitting outside with a plate of pasta and a glass of Italian red while watching boats glide past makes you forget you’re in Dorset rather than the Amalfi Coast. That setting elevates what is already a thoughtfully curated menu.

On my most recent visit, I ordered the seafood linguine, a dish that really showcases the kitchen’s attention to freshness. The mussels were plump, the prawns tender, and the tomato sauce balanced with just enough chilli to give it a gentle kick. According to the UK’s Seafish industry authority, freshness and traceability are key indicators of quality in seafood, and from taste and texture alone, Rosso’s clearly takes sourcing seriously. The pizza selection is equally impressive. Their wood-fired oven produces that classic thin, crisp base with slightly charred edges-exactly what the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana identifies as the hallmark of authentic Neapolitan-style pizza.

One thing I appreciate is how the menu caters to different dietary needs without making it feel like an afterthought. There are vegetarian pasta dishes rich with grilled vegetables and creamy sauces, lighter salads for lunchtime diners, and gluten-free options available on request. When I dined with a friend who follows a gluten-free diet, the staff walked us through the preparation process, explaining how they minimize cross-contamination in the kitchen. That level of transparency builds trust and shows real professionalism.

Service here has consistently been warm and attentive. On one occasion, our server noticed we were celebrating a birthday and surprised us with a dessert plate decorated with chocolate script. It’s small gestures like that which turn a simple meal into a memorable experience. Reviews from locals frequently mention the friendly team and steady service, even during busy weekend evenings. From what I’ve seen, they manage table flow efficiently without rushing guests-a balance that many waterfront restaurants struggle to achieve.

The dessert menu deserves its own spotlight. The tiramisu is creamy yet light, layered generously with espresso-soaked sponge. I’ve tried countless versions across the UK, and this one stands out for its texture and balance. Italian culinary expert Marcella Hazan once emphasized that simplicity and quality ingredients are the soul of Italian cooking. That philosophy is evident here, especially in dishes that rely on just a handful of components executed well.

Prices are in line with other marina-side restaurants in Poole, which makes sense given the prime location. While it may not be the cheapest Italian spot in town, the combination of atmosphere, portion size, and ingredient quality offers solid value. If you’re planning a weekend dinner, booking ahead is wise; tables fill quickly, particularly in summer when Dolphin Quays is buzzing with visitors.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. On one particularly busy night, our mains took a little longer than expected. However, the staff kept us informed and offered complimentary bread while we waited, which softened any frustration. Being upfront about delays is always appreciated, and it showed confidence in their service standards.

For anyone exploring Poole’s dining scene, whether you’re after handmade pasta, classic pizza, or a relaxed evening overlooking the harbour, Rosso’s Italiano delivers a well-rounded experience. Between the waterfront views, authentic Italian flavours, and consistently positive reviews from both locals and tourists, it holds its own as one of the standout Italian restaurants in the area.

  • View across Poole Harbour and service awesome. For me the pizza I'd like a little bit more authentic, hence 4 star for me. 4.5 Stars if I could. Everyone else loved the food. Looking forward to trying something else next time. Bill was for 9 people, pizzas are cheaper than the major retailers.

  • Upon entering staff were friendly and polite and attentive. Food and drinks were ordered in good time with the starters being very good. The pizzas were delicious and I would recommend them to anyone, as well as the pasta which tastes amazing. The atmosphere is very relaxed with nice chilled background music. Would definitely go again. Great for couples/families.

  • We had a fantastic family evening at Rosso’s Italiano on Poole Quay. The food was absolutely delicious — from the perfectly crafted pizzas to the incredibly tasty desserts that were simply unforgettable. The cocktails were spot on, refreshing and well-balanced. The location is amazing — right on the waterfront with a beautiful view of the quay and yachts. It’s the perfect setting for a relaxed meal with a great atmosphere. Special mention to the friendly and attentive staff — they really took the time to understand what we were looking for and gave great recommendations, both for food and drinks. They were also very kind and attentive to our children, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable for the family. Highly recommended — we’ll definitely be coming back!

  • Visited today was welcomed with the door being opened for us. We was placed in the window with a great view over the harbour. We had pizza and pasta and couldn’t fault either, would recommend this place.

  • Small and busy restaurant with good views of the Quay. Food was lovely and authentic (see photos). I had the melanzane parmigiana and it was the best I've had in a long while (and aubergine/eggplant is easy to get wrong!). We all cleaned our plates! Good choice of drinks and I appreciated the fact my Aperol Spritz came with different fruit in it....lemon, lime, blueberry and strawberry. Extra refreshing on a warm day. Decor is simple but pretty and it is dominated by large windows (the only snag being low lying sun!). What really made this restaurant was the staff though. They were good with communication and explained they were a little behind, asked if that was OK etc. They were very warm, friendly and polite. Definitely felt like eating at Nonna's with true Italian hospitality! Recommend and will definitely go back if in the area again.
